Introducing Projects

A home for the work your gear goes into. Import your DAW projects and record how your hardware was set, so you can pick a song back up later and know exactly where everything was.

Aureo has always been about two things: the gear you own, and how it’s wired together. Projects adds the third piece, the work all of that gear goes into. A song, an episode, a score.

If you’ve ever opened an old mix to make one small change and realized you have no idea where the compressor was sitting, or which patch that synth line came from, this one is for you.

Find the Projects You Already Have

You don’t start from an empty page. Aureo looks in the folders your DAWs save to, plus any folders you add in Settings, and lists the project files it finds for you to review. Pick the ones you want and import them.

It recognizes project files from Ableton Live, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Studio One, Bitwig Studio, FL Studio, REAPER, Ardour, LMMS, Reason, Renoise, GarageBand and more. Aureo only keeps a pointer to each file. It never moves or changes your projects. Scan again later and it tells you which imported projects have changed since.

See Which Plugins a Song Uses

For REAPER, Ardour and LMMS projects, and for DAWproject exports from Bitwig Studio and Studio One, Aureo reads the plugin list straight from the project file and matches each plugin to your library and the catalog.

Other DAWs keep their project formats closed or undocumented, so Aureo doesn’t read their plugins. The app tells you which formats are covered and why, right where it matters.

Sessions: The Story of a Project

Most songs aren’t made in one sitting. A project’s sessions are its timeline: tracking, overdubs, the mix, mastering, or whatever you want to call them. Each one can have a date or a date range (a year is fine if that’s all you remember), a place, the setup you used, and notes.

Each session keeps its own date, place, setup and gear recall.

Gear Recall

This is the part I built Projects for. In any session, add the hardware you used and write down how it was set:

  • Values, like “Cutoff at 3 o’clock” or “Threshold at -12”
  • A preset or patch you loaded
  • Notes, for anything else worth remembering
  • Photos of the panel, because sometimes a picture is faster

A Prophet 5, recalled the way it was set for tracking.

The same compressor can be set one way for tracking and another for the mix, and each session keeps its own recall. Duplicate a session and its settings come along (photos stay with the original), so the next pass starts where the last one left off.

Print a Recall Sheet

When you want it on paper, print a project’s recall sheet: every session and the gear in it, ready to keep by the desk or hand to a collaborator. Your system’s print dialog can also save it as a PDF.

The Rest of the Story

A project can also hold:

  • Credits, naming who played, engineered or produced
  • Release links to wherever it came out, with YouTube, SoundCloud and Spotify links playing right on the page
  • A type and tags, so you can organize however you like

Projects show up in search alongside the rest of your collection.

Yours, on Your Machine

Like everything else in Aureo, your projects live on your computer. No account, no upload, nothing leaving your studio.

Projects is in the latest version of Aureo. Update from inside the app, or download it to get started. The Projects page has the short version.
