Synthesizer

  • Polysynthi

The EMS Poly Synthi is a rare paraphonic synthesizer produced around 1978, featuring a fully polyphonic 4-octave pressure-sensitive keyboard controlling a Voltage Controlled Oscillator Bank while sharing a single VCA and filter across all voices. Approximately 30 units were manufactured before Electronic Music Studios' financial difficulties led to its discontinuation.

  • Synthi A

The EMS Synthi A is a portable briefcase-format analog synthesizer electronically identical to the VCS3, featuring three oscillators and a distinctive pin-matrix patchbay instead of traditional patch cables. Also known as the "Portabella," it became famous for generating sci-fi sounds heard in productions like Doctor Who.

  • Synthi AKS

The EMS Synthi AKS extends the Synthi A briefcase synthesizer with a 256-step digital sequencer and a 30-note touchplate keyboard activated by the 50 Hz hum in the player's fingers, adding performance and sequencing capabilities to the portable analog format.

  • VCS3

The EMS VCS3, nicknamed the Putney, is a legendary British analog monosynth from 1969 that pioneered a distinctive pin-matrix patching system in place of traditional patch cables, housed in an iconic angled wooden case.

Effect

  • Vocoder 2000

The EMS Vocoder 2000 is a British-made 16-channel voice synthesizer designed by Tim Orr at Electronic Music Studios. Manufactured from 1976 to 1979, this rack-mounted vocoder features a sophisticated filterbank and remains comparable to Roland's SVC-350 from the same era.

Sequencer

  • Synthi Sequencer 256

The Synthi Sequencer 256 is a standalone digital sequencer released by Electronic Music Studios (EMS) in 1971, derived from the Synthi 100 synthesizer. It features analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters to process control voltages for operating analog synthesizers, housed in a wooden case with a full 5-octave velocity-sensitive keyboard.
